Modern Seamanship by Don Dodds, "Modern Seamanship" is a comprehensive guide for boaters who wish to learn how to solve boating problems on their own by analyzing a situation and deftly using acquired knowledge. This book presumes you wish to know why, and not just how. Don Dodds covers in detail the use of such laborsaving technological advances as GPS and radar, which have revolutionized recreational boating in the past decade. But because technology, like water wings, can get boaters literally and figuratively into deep water without knowing how to swim, "Modern Seamanship" also explores the traditional seamanship skills upon which these space-age devices are based -- skills that always work, whether or not the batteries are dead. In its pages you will find information on navigation, weather, boat handling, docking, mooring, anchoring, common emergencies, communications, working with rope, and maintenance -- all skills a mariner needs to deal confidently with the sea.
The City Builders: Property Development in New York and London, 1980-2000 by Susan S. Fainstein, In the last twenty years, urban centers worldwide have experienced enormous booms and busts as real-estate developers, financial institutions, and public officials first poured resources into physical redevelopment, then watched as the market collapsed before booming again in the 1990s. In this extensively revised edition of her highly regarded The City Builders, Susan Fainstein examines major redevelopment efforts in New York and London to uncover the forces behind these investment cycles and the role that public policy can play in moderating market instability. Fainstein chronicles the progress of three development projects in New York (Times Square, downtown Brooklyn, and Battery Park City) and three in London (King's Cross, Spitalfields, and Docklands). Analyzing the political and economic processes underlying physical changes in these two cities during the last two decades, she uncovers the role played by developers' perceptions and strategies in their interactions with both public policy-makers and property markets. This new edition follows each development effort to the present and places the discussion in a newly strengthened theoretical framework. In her investigation of the convergence between London and New York during the 1980s and then the divergence that began in the 1990s, Fainstein traces similarities and differences in the effects of globalization, ideology, and institutional structure in each city's experience. This comparative framework also sheds considerable light on the contributing roles of structure and agency in creating final outcomes. Fainstein concludes by assessing the impact of "theme park" development on the urban fabric and recommending a set ofrealistic strategies to both redevelop cities and improve the lives of urban residents.
Battery balancer - A battery balancer is a device in a battery pack which can actively shuttle energy into a weak cell from other more healthy cells in the pack, they may also include the function of a battery regulator to prevent overcharging. Balancers are often found in Lithium ion battery packs for cell phones and laptop computers. Smart Battery Data - SBD (Smart Battery Data) is a method to monitor a rechargeable battery pack, initiated by Duracell and Intel. A special integrated circuit in the battery pack monitors the battery and reports information to the SMBus. Vanadium redox battery - The vanadium redox ( and redox flow ) battery is a type of rechargeable battery that was originally developed by Albero Pellegri and Placido Spaziante, their patent was granted in 1978, the first commercial development was by the University of New South Wales in Australia in 1984. The Vanadium redox battery exploits the ability of vanadium to exist in 4 different oxidation states, and uses this to make a battery that has just one chemical electrolyte instead of two. Nickel metal hydride battery - A nickel metal hydride (or NiMH) battery is a type of rechargeable battery similar to a nickel-cadmium (NiCad) battery but which does not contain expensive (and environmentally risky) cadmium. This is why they are sometimes called the most environmentally friendly battery type.
